EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
